A killer strikes, and Claire is on the case, at least according to author Dea Poirier who is the center of our spotlight interview today. Dea hails from sunny Florida where she’s getting ready to launch her debut novel in spring of 2019. But before I get excited and start spilling beans all over the place, let’s dive right in and meet this lovely author and follow her to a small hometown in Maine to learn about her upcoming book.

You have a debut novel coming out. Will you tell us about it?

My debut, NEXT GIRL TO DIE, is a thriller/suspense in which a detective hunts a serial killer with the same MO as the one who killed her sister fifteen years ago.

Solving the case will avenge her sister—unless the killer finds her first.

It’s been fifteen years since Claire Calderwood’s sister, Rachel, was brutally murdered in their small hometown in Maine. Claire has finally carved out a life for herself as a homicide detective in Detroit, but the past comes calling when the local police back home ask for her help with a murder eerily similar to Rachel’s.

Still haunted by Rachel’s cold case, Claire returns home, hoping to solve the crime and finally put her grief to rest. As she starts investigating, the last thing she needs is tenacious journalist Noah Washington asking questions she’s not ready to answer. But like her, Noah won’t give up until he finds the truth—and Claire reluctantly finds herself relying on him more and more when disturbing new details about Rachel’s death come to light.

When the killer strikes once again, Claire knows he’s not done. Now he’s set his sights on Claire, who will have to find the courage she needs to survive a deadly confrontation years in the making.

What sparked the idea for Next Girl to Die?

After reading SHARP OBJECTS by Gillian Flynn, other detective stories, and watching way too much SVU, I really wanted to write a story about a deeply damaged detective who had to solve crimes that hit too close to home—literally. The story grew from there into NEXT GIRL TO DIE.

Are there any literary pilgrimages you took to draw inspiration for this story? Or any which impacted this story?

Not for this story. I’ve spent a lot of time in New England, I lived in Connecticut for a while and drew some inspiration from that. Unfortunately, I’ve never been to Maine, the main location of this novel, but I would love to go soon!

Did you hide any secrets in your book intended for close friends and family to find?

Maybe 😉

Are there any deleted scenes or short stories from Claire’s world where readers might get a taste of what’s to come?

I have several chapters that I’ve written from the antagonist’s POV that didn’t make it into this book. They might end up as a short story in the future!

Can readers expect a sequel?

Yes, I am working on the sequel to NEXT GIRL TO DIE as we speak! Editing it currently.

Where can readers buy pre-order Next Girl to Die, or any of your other books?

You can pre-order NEXT GIRL TO DIE on Amazon now! Stay tuned on 13 September as we reveal the cover for this fantastic thriller.
