Wonder Twin Powers… Activate

In August of this year (2017), I entered a brand new Twitter competition called WonderPitch. It was new, fairly small, and run by two amazing ladies: Jeanna Skinner & Emma Finlayson-Palmer.

I didn’t expect much, honestly, because my story and pitches seemed to strike out about everywhere. But hey, what better way to meet other writers and hone your pitching skills? The morning of announcements, I’d slept past my alarm. By the time I woke up and flipped on my phone, Twitter had blown up. The winners were announced, and holy crap I’d won first place. I just sat there staring at my phone wondering if I was in the right universe.

Managing Time as a Writer

Managing time is not a rodeo I’m unfamiliar with, but this past week has definitely challenged my schedule.  Between family obligations, out of town visitors, writing, editing, and critiques, I’ve been sleeping less and wrapped around my kindle a lot more than normal. On top of it all, I still have a paid job I need to keep on top of. Over the course of nearly a decade of contract work, here’s what I’ve discovered:

  1. Make time for yourself. No matter how exhausted you are, or how many projects are brewing on your plate, downtime will help clear out the numbness and cobwebs. When working on several projects at once, an agile, refreshed mind is a must.

Standing Out in the Crowd

Whether you’re a national corporation or just creating your brand, standing out in any crowd is a tough thing to do. Especially with so much focus on assaulting the world with millions of names, logos, and products, it can be difficult to wave your hands and scream “pick me”, and be noticed.

A few things to know:

I. Your brand will be viewed subjectively. Everyone has an opinion. Even with this article, some will crinkle their noses and click away from the site. Bye! Others will stay and be drawn by my words (haha), the layout of the site, or the pretty banners at the top. This is where knowing how to find your audience comes in. Don’t walk into a saloon peddling tea and cookies. The same goes with writers and their stories...

Don’t Beg & Bully, Engage Your Audience

As I slowly weave my way into the writing world, the biggest thing that stands out to me is the marketing. Truth, it’s a minefield out there and in the modern, digital age it’s even tougher to take your story, hold it up high, and have anyone notice you’re there.

Go to the grocery store and stand in line. I dare you to look in any direction and not be assaulted by advertisements. Yes, assaulted. It’s why half the time I get my groceries delivered. But I digress…

Be the solution. Don’t assault your audience, engage them.

Keep it simple. Remember the 90s when every advertiser was screaming at you from a web page? Banners flashed neon pinks and yellows, marching ants paraded around the border. Don’t be that guy. Seriously, stop trying to blind everyone.

Full name: Sadie Elora Harrowick

Age: 7 years old

Born: On Cherokee Ridge Ranch in Washington. They used to have a beautiful website but it’s been down for a few years otherwise I’d be linking them for sure. Sadie’s mama was 70% Arctic Timber, 30% Alaskan Husky and pure white. She was supposed to be paired with a dark gray brindled Malamut, but ended up accidentally pregnant before that. They believe the papa was a golden lab, but aren’t a hundred percent certain.

Only three puppies were born in the litter, two gold females and a black male. At five weeks old Sadie was pushed out of the litter...
